Stress has been dubbed the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century” by the World Health Organization, and for good reason.
Modern living places us in a perpetual state of stress that exhausts our immune systems, setting the stage for chronic disease.
We are constantly switched on. Our lives have become a balancing act of endless multitasking. Our sleep is punctuated with “what if’s.” What if I lose my job? What if I’m sicker than I thought? What if…?
Stress has many faces and creeps into our lives from many directions. No matter what causes it, it negatively impacts the body and the mind. It floods the body with stress hormones. The heart pounds. Muscles tense. Breathing quickens. The stomach churns.
For many, being stressed is new the norm. We are largely oblivious to the impact it is having on our bodies until we start having serious symptoms or reach breaking point.
In essence, we are letting stress control our lives.
Many chronic diseases are underpinned by stress – cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome. It can also fuel anxiety, depression, low immunity, sleeplessness, and overindulgence, to name a few.
Although it is unrealistic to avoid stress altogether, we do need to learn how to manage it. A key action is to identify stress-related problems as early as possible, so that action can be taken before serious illness occurs. This can involve physical, dietary and mental interventions.
