Risk Versus Gain
Before you perform an exercise or routine you’ve seen somebody do on the internet, gym or park, please do your homework before you do it, especially if you have any uncertainty. When attempting an exercise or workout routine, if the risk outweighs the gain it provides, then in our opinion you shouldn’t do it. It might look good and challenging but you don’t necessarily know the training history of the person performing it, that is they may have a long training history or may even be an elite athlete training for a specific event.
At Urban Fitness we have posted some of our clients on Facebook and Instagram performing an exercise, but unknown to anyone these clients have been training with us for many years, a few sessions a week and have built a solid foundation to enable them to perform particular exercises. A good example of this is when we see an overweight person performing a box jump. The box jump is a great exercise but when I see the damage it’s doing to the knees, ankles and hips to an overweight person, it’s simply not worth it. The same way an orthopedic surgeon would ask you to lose some weight and see how you go before opting for a knee reconstruction in some instances or a hip replacement.
Start by sitting up and down in a chair at home or a park bench if you’re outdoors. Then work on going lower than your chair gradually. You should stay at the same exercise or routine for a minimum of six weeks before you progress to a more advanced exercise, so that you build the strength to perform the exercise with the right technique so as to not cause injury. Stay focused on your program and you won’t find yourself needing to visit the physiotherapist. Constantly chopping and changing your training routine and not following a plan, you’re likely to incur some serious injuries.
Build a solid foundation, have patience with your training and progress and we assure you that one day you will be able to perform any exercise or routine you want to. Half of our clients, if not more, are often referred to us by their physiotherapist or Specialist and can now do exercises they never dreamed of doing, so it’s definitely worth being patient and building a solid foundation.
