Desk Jobs Linked to Poor Health
Office workers and people who sit for at least eight hours every day must do at least an hour of exercise to offset the inactivity, according to a new study. [i]
The average Aussie is sedentary for more than 70 per cent of their waking hours, according to an Australian government statistics. [ii]
Unfortunately, too much sitting is associated with higher mortality rates and with developing diabetes and other chronic diseases. [ii]
The 20-year international study [i] , based on data from more than one million adults, found that inactivity now takes as many lives as smoking and poses higher health risks than obesity.
The researchers estimated inactivity is now responsible for 5.3 million deaths worldwide – a similar number as smoking.
The study found inactivity is even more harmful than smoking as many more adults and children are inactive than the numbers who smoke.
Inactivity: The Effects
Researchers found inactivity is now the main cause of preventable death from illnesses such as disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and dementia.
They found inactivity was worse than obesity - although the two causes are directly linked as not exercising leads to weight gain.
This is because inactivity gradually reduces our body’s ability to carry out its essential daily tasks.
What Can You Do
Many people in office-based jobs are stuck with sitting for prolonged periods of time but these people must balance the ill-effects with lots of physical activity.
Researchers found the risk is almost eliminated if people did at least 60 to 75 minutes exercise a day.
That might be a brisk walk, bike ride or even an outdoor fitness program.
An hour of physical activity per day is the goal but if you simply can’t manage this, even brief spurts of activity such as walking during the day or each hour can help.
Take a five minute break from sitting every hour and get moving.
